Our Mission
Engaged Buddhists for Responsible AI aims to equip Buddhist communities and institutions globally to meaningfully engage in the conversation around AI safety and ethics. Through research, coalition-building, and advocacy, we hope to empower Buddhist voices to ensure AI is developed for the benefit of all beings.

Hear from Buddhist voices about their hopes and concerns for AI
Build the foundation for a coalition of socially engaged Buddhists that can raise the salience of AI safety & ethics and advocate for more humane AI futures

Undertaking technical research projects on how to skillfully use AI to uphold the Dharma (e.g., through training Buddhist AI models)
Enabling grassroots work to support global well-being in the face of transformative AI

Why Buddhism and AI?
We believe AI is likely to dramatically transform society, and that everyone should be involved in helping shape the future for the better. Wisdom traditions have a lot to contribute to the conversation. Buddhism, in particular, offers powerful philosophical and ethical frameworks for understanding intelligence, agency, attention, and other concepts fundamental to today’s AI systems. Buddhism also offers powerful practices and teachings on mindfulness and mind training, many of which may offer significant benefit to individuals if society undergoes a period of rapid change. Right now, the Buddhist and AI communities are relatively separate; this initiative aims to bridge the gap.
